Well Pump Power Outage: How to Keep Water Running
Well pumps typically need a continuous few hundred to over a thousand watts depending on depth and motor size, plus a much higher surge to start the motor — check your pump's nameplate rating before sizing a generator or power station.
A generator or power station rated for your pump's running watts alone may not have enough surge capacity to start the motor. Look for rated watts, then add real headroom for the starting surge.

What size generator do I need for a well pump?
It depends on your pump's horsepower and depth — a typical 1/2 HP submersible well pump draws roughly 1,000-1,500W running, with a surge of 2-3x that to start. Check your pump's nameplate for its exact rating, or use our generator sizing calculator with your pump's listed wattage.
Why did my generator stall when the well pump started?
This is almost always a surge (starting watts) problem, not a running watts problem — the pump's motor draws a short burst of much higher power to start than it needs once running, and if the generator's surge rating is too close to its running rating, it can trip or stall at that moment.
Can a power station run a well pump?
A mid-size power station can run smaller well pumps, especially soft-start or lower-horsepower models, but check both its continuous watt rating and surge watt rating against your specific pump — deeper or larger wells often need a generator instead.
